This engaging and purposeful series lessons enables children to gradually build towards a well-structured historical fiction composition. The lessons build up an Ancient Egyptian historical fiction story, but could reasonably be adapted to aid children in constructing historical fiction pieces based on different eras. This resource contains all of the six lessons in the series. They are focused on: -Introduction to Historical Fiction; -Setting the Scene; -Developing Characters; -Narrative Structure; -The Climax; -Editing and Redrafting. The comprehensive PowerPoint presentations guide teachers and learners through a logical step-by-step learning journey - these include SPAG starters, individual/ partner/ group activities, modelled examples, and extended written opportunities (following clear objectives and success criteria. All of the worksheets and activity resources are provided (in both Word and PDF). These lessons were originally created for children in lower Key Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4).

These engaging and informative lessons develop KS1 children’s understanding of how people of different faiths choose to live their lives in special ways. There are six lessons in total, with two lessons each focusing on the Christian, Buddhist and Muslim faiths respectively. The lessons should be taught in the following order: Christianity - The Good Samaritan (belief in compassion/ forgiveness); Christianity - The Life of a Vicar Buddhism - How Buddhists Live Buddhism - Buddhist Monks and Nuns Islam - Muslim Prayer Islam - The Holy Month of Ramadan In each lesson, the learning is guided by a clear and colourful PowerPoint presentation, which guides students through a step-by-step learning journey. There are also all of the reading and worksheets included - everything that you need to teach the lessons. In the past, I have used these lessons with children from across Key Stage 1 - the key learning is aligned with curriculum expectations for RE, and also the content prescribed by most diocese regions. These whole class reading sessions aim to develop children’s comprehension skills, whilst introducing them to the novels of popular author Emma Carroll. The eight sessions include the extracts/ texts and presentations for whole class reading sessions on: -Escape to the River Sea; -Frost Hollow Hall; -In Darkling Wood; -Letters from the Lighthouse; -Secrets of a Sun King; -Sky Chasers; -The Girl Who Walked on Air; -When We Were Warriors. Each whole class reading session contains a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, prediction and summarising skills. There is also a vocabulary check immediately after each extract is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language. The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions and deeper thinking activities. The sessions are best suited for children in upper KS2, although with minor adaptations they could feasibly be used with slightly younger and older year groups. The resources are also suitable for home/ remote learning.

These engaging and purposeful lessons guide children towards creating their own Pablo Picasso cubism-style self portraits. Included is a complete series of six comprehensive lessons: Lesson 1: Self-Portraits -Define self-portraits and understand why they are important; -Reflect on the key meanings behind some of the world’s most renowned self-portraits; -Think about their own identity and consider how their features may be shown in self-portrait through colours, shapes and symbols. Lesson 2: Picasso and Cubism -Use effective research skills and a research template to find out key information about Pablo Picasso’s life; -Analyse cubist paintings and understand the key features of the cubist movement; -Consider how facial features can be presented in the cubist style. Lesson 3: Exploring Creative Ideas -Recall important facts about self-portraits, Picasso and cubism; -Consider how they can present each facial feature in the cubism style; -Reflect on the feeling, tone and effect of their sketches, deciding on which ideas to develop further in the next lesson; Lesson 4: Developing Creative Ideas -Consider, adapt and edit the use of lines and shapes in their designs/ sketches; -Develop the use of objects, symbols and colour in their work; -Put all of the ideas together from the sessions thus far to produce a final draft design. Lesson 5: Compositions -Understand the key term ‘composition’ and learn about their creative freedom to organise concepts on the page; -Create their compositions, following clear and precise instructions (provided); -Learn about different types of brushstrokes that were utilised by Picasso for effect within his own cubism self-portraits; Lesson 6: Evaluations -Act as ‘art critics’, expressing their likes and dislikes about art compositions; -Follow a precise success criteria (provided) to determine the success of their own and their partner’s compositions; -Put all of the ideas together from all of the lessons in the unit to comprehensively evaluate their own learning, using a provided framework. This lesson bundle contains all six lessons from the series: -Lesson 1: What is a Recount? -Lesson 2: Vocabulary Building -Lesson 3: Developing Sentences -Lesson 4: Creating Cohesion -Lesson 5: Varying Sentences -Lesson 6: Editing and Redrafting In my experience, the lessons each take between 2 and 3 hours to deliver, so depending upon your own pace there is likely 12 lessons of content here. Each lesson contains an eye-catching and comprehensive PowerPoint presentation, in addition to any additional sheets, templates, or structure strips required for the lesson - everything needed to teach is included. A range of knowledge recall, think, pair, share, independent, and peer/self review activities are included to ensure that writing compositions are gradually enhanced over the course of the unit. These lessons were originally created for children in lower Key Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4), however, could easily be used for upper KS2 with only minor adaptations. The focus of the recount in these resources is a ‘journey’, but the resources have been made in a way that they can be easily adapted to your chosen topic/ subject matter.
